Extra, extra,
write all about it

Empire Times is made by Flinders students, for Flinders students.

You can submit writing, art, photography, comics, reviews, essays, poetry and more. You don’t need to be an experienced writer or have a finished idea before getting involved.

If you’ve got something to say, make or share, this is where to start.

How to contribute

Submit your work

Already have something you’d like Empire Times to consider? Send through your finished or nearly finished work.

Pitch an idea

Got an idea but haven’t made it yet? Send us a pitch and the editors can help you work out where to take it.

Read the Contributor Guide

Check the practical stuff before you start, including word counts, images, deadlines and what happens after you submit.

Current submissions

Submissions are open all year.

If you want your work considered for a particular print issue, submit before that issue’s production cut-off:

Issue 1: 15 January

Issue 2: 12 March

Issue 3: 11 June

Issue 4: 20 August

Work submitted after a cut-off can still be considered for the website or a later print issue.

Does it need to be published right now?!

If your piece is time-sensitive, newsworthy or connected to something happening now, let the editors know when you submit it. It may be better suited to the Empire Times website rather than waiting for the next print issue.

What can I submit?

Writing

Articles, opinion, essays, reviews, interviews, creative writing, poetry, humour, personal stories and other student-led pieces are all welcome.

Visual work

Photography, illustration, comics, artwork and other visual submissions are welcome. Send the highest quality version you have available.

Contributor guide

The contributor guide covers the practical details for submitting to Empire Times, including word counts, images, formatting, editing, copyright and what to expect from the publication process.

You don’t need to memorise it before contributing, but it’s there if you want more detail before you start.

Need a hand?

Not sure where to start, whether your idea fits, or what to submit?

You can send the editors a pitch if you’re still developing an idea, or get in touch if you have a question about submissions, deadlines, images or anything else.
