Issue 2 Submissions Open

Empire Times Issue 2 is open for submissions, and we’re digging into labour as our theme. We mean labour in all its forms, from paid work and student jobs to unpaid internships, domestic and emotional labour, burnout, and “working for exposure”, across campus and beyond.

Submissions due by Thursday 5 March

What you need to know:

Theme: Labour (working, unpaid, underpaid, burn out, “exposure”, all of it)
Deadline: Thursday 5 March

How to submit:

Visit the contribe section and check out the (a) Contributor Guide before you use the (b) Submission Form

Not ready to submit? Flick us an email with a pitch and we’ll chat it out

We’re keeping this broad, but the vibe is along the lines of:

  • Working for exposure

  • Capitalism has entered the chat

  • Pay me.

Pitch Ideas if you fancy them:

Unpaid internships and “experience” culture
Who benefits, who gets locked out.

Student jobs
Roster chaos, casualisation, customer abuse, workplace rights, wage theft, weird workplace stories

Cost of living
The invisible admin of being broke, budgeting, food, transport, housing, Centrelink, moving back home, working the system.

Creative labour
Art, design, writing, content, freelancing, “do it for exposure”, portfolio pressure.

Domestic labour
Housework, caregiving, emotional labour, family expectations while studying

Burnout
Hustle culture, productivity guilt, overcommitment, “side hustle” brain, rest as resistance

Campus-specific labour
What work looks like at Flinders, placements, prac, lab work, studio hours, volunteering
