Empire Times 2019 Creative Competition Terms, Conditions, and Rules
Empire Times is proud to host another creative competition. This is an exciting opportunity for aspiring artists and writers hoping to develop their skills, and for our editors to discover emerging talents in a variety of fields.
2019 brings bigger prizes, guest judges, and a special event to announce our winners.
The three Empire Times editors (Kienan McKay, James Watson, and Alicia Wood) will make a shortlist of nominees for each category, then our guest judges will pick our winners.
All entries are due by midnight on Monday the 5th of August. Winners and runners up will be contacted in early September. They will be formally announced and presented at our launch in September for issue 7 ‘Creative’.
If you have any questions or queries, feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Categories and Judges:
Short Prose Writing (3,000 Words)
Here we are looking for a creative prose piece. It can be anything from a science fiction story, to a piece of life writing, to a short domestic drama. We ask that entries for this category stay within a 3,000-word limit.
The winner for prose writing will receive $200 cash as well as publication in issue 7 of Empire Times. The runner up will receive $50 cash. Both writers will have an opportunity to read their work publicly. This winner will be chosen by Flinders creative writing teacher Dr Sean Williams.

Poetry (80 Words)
Poetry is a beautiful and varied art form. Empire Times loves to publish diverse poetry that speaks to the mind, heart, and soul. Entries for this category can take many styles; maybe a free verse piece, or a romantic sonnet, or even a minimalist Haiku. We ask that entries for this category try and remain within our 80-word limit.
The winner for our poetry category will receive $200 cash as well as publication in issue 7 of Empire Times. The runner up will receive $50 cash. Both writers will have an opportunity to read their work publicly. This winner will be chosen by Alicia Carter, another creative writing teacher at Flinders.

This category is our most broad, as visual art can be many things. Here we are happy to accept paintings, drawings, digital art, or even sculptures. However, because we have a separate section for Photography, we ask that photographs are kept out of the visual art category. Due to the varied nature of this category and potential submissions, please email Empire Times so we can liaise about the best way to receive your submission.
The winner for our visual art category will receive $200 cash as well as publication in issue 7 of Empire Times. The runner up will receive $50 cash. Both artists will have an opportunity to present their work publicly. This winner will be chosen by creative arts teacher Dr Nick Prescott.

Unlike the broad category of visual art, photography is a little more specific. Use a camera that suits you and send us your best photo. The subject of your photo can be anything; a portrait of a stranger, a shot of a building, or a cheeky close up of a duck (if you can get close enough). Please make sure your photo is at least 300 DPI, and preferably sent as a TIFF file. Please account for a 3-millimetre bleed on all sides of the photo.
The winner for our photography category will receive $200 cash as well as publication in issue 7 of Empire Times. The runner up will receive $50 cash. Both photographers will have an opportunity to present their work publicly. This winner will be chosen by digital media teacher Katie Cavanagh.
